Monday, October 3, 2011 is National Child Health Day. This year’s theme is Helping Children Lead Healthy Lives. A HRSA website was created at http://mchb.hrsa.gov/
For Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2F HICs), Child Health Day has particular significance. F2F HICs provide information, training, technical assistance, and peer support to families of children with special health care needs, representing over 8.8 million families or 1 in 5 households in the U.S.

Family to Family Health Information Centers (F2FHIC)
In our state, Family Voices Indiana is the family to family health information center.
F2F HICs are uniquely able to help families with children and youth with special health care needs and/or disabilities because they are staffed by family members who have first-hand experience navigating the maze of health care services and programs for children and youth with special heath care needs. F2F health information specialists understand the issues that families face and are aptly qualified to help families make informed decisions.
All F2F HICs provide:
- Assistance to families and professionals in navigating health care systems;
- Information, education, training, support and referral services;
- Outreach to underserved / underrepresented populations
- Guidance on health programs and policy; and
- Collaboration with other F2F HICs, family groups, and professionals in efforts to improve services for CSHCN.

311 Prenatal Hotline
Every year nearly one million American women deliver babies without receiving adequate medical attention. Babies born to mothers who received no prenatal care are three times more likely to be born at low birth weight, and five times more likely to die, than those whose mothers received prenatal care. If you are pregnant, programs in Indiana can help you have a healthy baby. These programs offer medical care, support and advice for pregnant women, information about health insurance and other services you and your baby may need. There are many free or low-cost services for pregnant women and their babies. For more information, call 1-800-311-BABY (1-800-311-2229). For information in Spanish, call 1-800-504-7081.
Insure Kids Now
Medicaid and CHIP provide no-cost or low-cost health coverage for eligible children in Indiana. Even if your children have been turned down in the past or you don’t know if they qualify, you may be able to get health coverage for them now. Medicaid and CHIP provide health coverage for children so that they can get routine check-ups, immunizations and dental care to keep them healthy. They can also get doctor visits, prescription medications and hospital care when they’re sick, and much more.

Health Centers
Federally-funded health centers care for you, even if you have no health insurance. You pay what you can afford, based on your income. Health centers provide
- checkups when you're well
- treatment when you're sick
- complete care when you're pregnant
- immunizations and checkups for your children
- dental care and prescription drugs for your family
- mental health and substance abuse care if you need it

To help more pregnant women and new moms get information about caring for their health and giving their babies the best possible start in life, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) launched text4baby, the first free health text messaging service in the U.S.Text4baby supports moms by providing accurate, text-length health information and resources in a format that is personal and timely, using a channel she knows and uses
Text the word baby to 511411 (envia bebe al 511411) for free weekly text messages that will support you through pregnancy and the first year of baby's life. Topics include prenatal care, labor signs and symptoms, nutrition, breastfeeding, safety, infant and child development, and more.
