Article 7 powerpoint available

The new Article 7 (Indiana's Special Education Law) goes into effect Wednesday, August 13, 2008. A full text version of the code is available online at http://www.doe.state.in.us/exceptional/speced/laws.html.
Family Voices urges its members to be aware that the implementation of this code will bring some significant changes to how issues including but not limited to discipline, written notice, consent, preschool class size and time, and post secondary transition are addressed. While the DOE has not offered training to families, it has trained school personnel and the state agencies that support families of children with disabilities.
You can view that DOE powerpoint here.

You may note references to ISTART7. ISTART7 stands for Indiana Standards Tool for Article 7 Compliance. It is the electronic IEP that has been developed by the Indiana Department of Education, Division of Exceptional Learners in collaboration with the ICAN Project and ICAN partnerships across the state. Compliance and best practice will be promoted with this technology as ISTART7 will be available to correspond with the promulgation of the new Article 7. You can view the current documentation on the training materials page.

Families are encouraged to learn about the new Article 7, to ask questions of school personnel and advocacy organizations, and to attend trainings as you seek to partner with your child's school and advocate for your child.
