IN*SOURCE’s “Fund the Gap” Campaign

FV Indiana shares the following from one of our partner organizations:
South Bend, IN – November 19, 2010 – The Indiana Resource Center for Families with Special Needs (IN*SOURCE) , is issuing a statewide invitation to individuals and organizations to step up and make a difference in the lives of youths with disabilities and their families. According to Rich Burden, Executive Director, the main source of funding for the organization recently changed from a grant to a contract. This change calls for the organization to pay for operating expenses that would previously have been paid by grant funds and then wait for reimbursement from the state. “Our contract with the state will continue to provide a stable source of long-term funding, Burden says. “However, the change means we now have to pay our expenses up-front and then wait to be reimbursed by the state.” According to Burden, IN*SOURCE needs to raise $70,000 over the next few months to continue assisting Hoosier families, and meet the organization’s expenses.

IN*SOURCE has been providing assistance at no cost to children with special needs and their families for over 35 years. Last year alone, over 25,000 parents sought one-on-one assistance from the organization for help in understanding Article 7, Indiana’s special education mandate. Another 4,960 parents attended free training classes to further help them in advocating for their children.

Burden says the organization’s mission is to provide parents, families and service providers in Indiana the information and training necessary to assure effective educational programs and appropriate services for children and young adults with disabilities. “Someone once said that one hundred years from now, it won’t matter what kind of car we drove, what kind of house we lived in, or how much money we had in the bank,” Burden states. “However, the world may be a better place because we made a difference in a child’s life. Our mission remains intact,” he states, “and we extend a heartfelt invitation to everyone to get on board with us. All contributions will be greatly appreciated.”
