Dear President-elect Donald Trump and Republican leaders of the House and the Senate:

You have made your intent clear to repeal the Affordable Care Act. If you do, millions of people will lose their health insurance. You would return us to the days before Obamacare, when insurance companies could deny coverage to the sick and kick people off insurance if they ran up big bills. 

It means turning back the clock to when fundamental benefits—like maternity care, prescription drugs, and mental health care—were not routinely covered, and women were charged higher premiums based solely on gender. 

If you repeal the Affordable Care Act, you will be responsible for reversing enormous progress:

• 20 million people have gained health insurance, bringing the uninsured rate to historic lows.
• Up to 129 million people with pre-existing conditions like cancer, asthma, and diabetes can no longer be denied or charged more for health insurance, and are guaranteed that their plan will cover the care they need. 
• All health plans, including Medicare and private insurance, are required to cover preventive servicesat no cost – like contraception and recommended cancer screenings and vaccines.
• 105 million people, including people with employer coverage, no longer face lifetime caps on their benefits that effectively cut off coverage for the sickest individuals when they needed it the most.
• Medicaid has been strengthened and improved, making it available to millions of hard-working men and women with no access to affordable health insurance.

You have spent years promising to “replace” Obamacare and we have seen nothing. With what? How will you build on this progress without hurting millions of people in this country?

The Affordable Care Act should not be repealed. And you certainly should take no such actions without making it crystal clear how every person who has benefitted from the Act will retain those benefits. The people of this country deserve far better than the empty promises that don’t even come close to the coverage, benefits, and consumer and financial protections the ACA provides. They deserve an honest process from day one.

We must protect the gains we have made. We ask you to consider the pain that repeal would cause and promise that not a single person will lose insurance coverage, have their benefits cut, or have their costs increase as a result of the actions you take. We ask you to uphold the gains of the ACA. The health and lives of millions are at stake.
