IMPORTANT MESSAGE for families whose children receive SSI

proposed rule from the Social Security Administration (SSA) would require some children receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to prove their continuing disability more frequently than they must do now.  More frequent disability reviews will be required for children with certain behavioral conditions, cancers, asthma, and certain other conditions. Additional reviews may also be required when children are nearing ages 6 and 12.  See this fact sheet for more information.

It is important for the SSA to hear from families.  It is easy to submit comments either by:
(1) using pre-written comments from The Arc, which you should personalize, OR
(2) writing or attaching comments on this page of the Regulations.gov website. Comments on this website can be anonymous if you wish (just don’t fill in your name).

Comments can be very simple, such as:
As the parent of a child who receives SSI benefits, I oppose the proposed rule that would require more frequent disability reviews.  These reviews are very burdensome for children and families.  In addition, I fear that my child will needlessly lose benefits due to errors or problems with paperwork.  We cannot afford to lose these benefits, which my child clearly deserves. [Add info about why your child deserves to receive SSI.] Thank you for your attention to my concerns.
