Child Welfare Panelist, American Academy of Pediatrics

The American Academy of Pediatrics is seeking applications for a panel of five individuals with lived experience in the child welfare system who will serve as panelists at a series of virtual convenings on key child welfare policy issues. Panelists will receive financial compensation for their time and expertise.

In Fall 2020, the American Academy of Pediatrics will host a series of three virtual convenings on key child welfare policy issues with critical input, feedback, and contributions from a panel that brings diverse lived and professional experiences. This panel will work closely with AAP to inform the development of innovative child welfare policy recommendations that can inform AAP‘s work educating policymakers in the 117th Congress and next presidential administration.

Over a four-month period, the panel will participate in and support the development of three meetings to exchange ideas, collaborate and brainstorm with relevant stakeholders, and develop ideas for advancing the three pre-determined subject areas. This will culminate in a final policy paper that will serve as a blueprint for the development and implementation of a reimagined child welfare system to help inform AAP’s future policy work.

At the conclusion of these three convenings, the panel will support AAP’s work drafting a final report of findings and recommendations in collaboration and consultation with AAP policy staff. AAP will share this resource and related materials that distill its findings with key stakeholders in 2021 to assist state and federal policymakers, their constituents, and the child welfare community.

This opportunity will support 10-15 hours per month from August-December of panelists’ time to the planning, execution, and debriefing of the virtual convenings.

Working remotely with the Director of Federal Advocacy and Child Welfare Policy and the Manager of Child Welfare Policy, the panelists will have the opportunity to utilize the expertise they have gained through their lived personal and professional experiences to create innovative ideas for a reimagined child welfare system. The role includes active participation in the development, planning, and execution of three virtual convenings that will challenge key stakeholders to rethink child welfare policy and advocacy. Additionally, it will include analyzing, distilling, and supporting the writing of a report in collaboration with AAP staff of recommendations on key child welfare policy issues utilizing our panelists expertise and the key takeaways from each convening.

An overview of the opportunity is attached here. To apply for the position, please email KRichmond@aap.org with your CV and a personal statement of no more than 500 words outlining why you feel passionately and would want to accomplish serving on this panel.

Applications will receive consideration on a rolling basis through August 25, 2020.
