Health Affairs has published a brief discussing the role Medicaid may play in ensuring equitable access to COVID vaccinations when they become available. Specifically addressed is the dichotomy of Medicaid providers as a key access point for vaccinations for vulnerable populations, but that low reimbursement formulas deter some providers from participating in vaccination programs.
If vaccination reimbursement formulas are left to the state, as they were during H1N1, this will call for advocacy of fair reimbursement rates in each state to promote broad provider participation. Another strategy suggested in the brief is to advocate for a national reimbursement standard. One method to do so would be raising the Federal Matching Assistance Percentage to 100 percent, similar to how COVID testing reimbursement rates were set. |
