SSI Program Could Get a Needed Update

A new bipartisan bill in the Senate, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, S. 4102, would raise the asset limits to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples, and index them to inflation. Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican Sen. Rob Portman teamed up to introduce the bill in May to update the Supplemental Security Income program's rules for how much money beneficiaries can have set aside. The bill is currently in the Senate Finance Committee.
