Usage of Hoyer Lifts
The purpose of this memorandum is to clarify the allowable usage of Hoyer Lifts when providing services for individuals who participate in Money Follows the Person program and the Aged and Disabled and Traumatic Brain Injury waivers. This memorandum supersedes all previous guidance regarding the use of Hoyer Lifts.
Under IC 16-27-4-16, caregivers who perform attendant care services must be trained and evaluated on tasks that the personal services agency chooses to have the employee perform. The Family and Social Services Administration Division of Aging is aligning its requirements with those of the Indiana Department of Health to encompass the usage of Hoyer Lifts. As long as providers and employees are properly trained in the use of Hoyer Lifts, usage of these lifts is allowed under the aforementioned programs. Providers should ensure that their liability insurance covers the use of lifts.
