Museums Offer Great Learning Opportunities for Youth

From IYI Weekly Update

Museums present an engaging chance for children to encounter and discover unfamiliar things in a vibrant and instructive setting. Did you know The Children Museum of Indianapolis is the world’s largest children’s museum?

By engaging with interactive displays and participating in hands-on activities, children can actively engage in their own education, fostering their curiosity and growth.

This distinctive exposure establishes a basis for creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper connection to the world they inhabit. But taking youths to a museum can sometimes seem like a daunting task. Below are few tips from Circle City Adventure Kids to maximize engagement, learning, and fun at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.

          Plan

  1. If possible, try to visit on a weekday. As you might imagine, the crowds at the museum are substantially larger on the weekends. *Note: The museum is closed on Mondays in the fall and winter.

  1. The Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience is a blast. However, it is outdoors, so it is not open in the winter (beginning of November through mid-March).

  1. Buy your tickets online ahead of time. According to the museum, you can save up to 25% if you buy your tickets at least two weeks in advance. Pack

  2. Bring food and water with you. You can pack a lunch or snacks and bring them into the museum.

  3. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Pack an extra outfit for your little kids as there are areas where they can get a little wet.  Prioritize

  4. The Children’s Museum is almost 500,000 square feet. It’s packed full of exhibits spread out over 5 indoor levels and it has a 7.5 acre outdoor sports experience. Make a list of exhibits before visiting. Then, as a group, make a list of the exhibits that are must-see. There is a huge ramp in the middle of the museum and several elevators for everyone’s use, so moving from one floor to another is easy.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis also offers the following discounted passes:

  • $6 First Thursday Nights – Enjoy the museum for $6 from 4-8 pm on the first Thursday of every month.

  • Access Pass – Families that receive Indiana state assistance may qualify for the museum Indiana Access Pass program.

  • Neighborhood Club – The Children’s Museum offers free museum memberships to families who live in the museum’s six surrounding Mid-North neighborhoods—regardless of a family’s income or ability to pay.

  • Under 2 Years Old – Children under age 2 years old are always free at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and the Riley Children’s Health Sports Experience.

  • Foster Family Memberships – The Children’s Museum partners with the Department of Child Services to offer a free one-year membership to households caring for foster children. Bring a valid Indiana foster parent license to the museum box office to register.
