Universal Language Access Symbol Bill Introduced

From Justice in Aging

Last week, Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) and Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) introduced the bipartisan Health Communication Access and Resources for Everyone (Health CARE) Act (H.R. 5762) that aims to address barriers that many older adults and others with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) face in accessing information in their language.  The legislation would require the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to research and establish a universal language access symbol to guide people to phone numbers for interpreters or translated materials.  Such a symbol would help ensure the 6.5 million older adults with LEP can understand their health coverage and care and reduce the health disparities caused by inadequate language access.  You can call on your members of Congress to pass the Health CARE Act by using the National Immigration Law Center's action tool.
