Exploring Medicaid Opportunities to Better Support LGBTQ+ Health

"LGBTQ+ individuals face well-documented health disparities and inequities, and are more likely to live below the poverty line and be enrolled in Medicaid. Federal agencies have begun prioritizing efforts to protect LGBTQ+ health care access and are encouraging Medicaid agencies to collect sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data. Persistent homophobia and transphobia, however, as well as increasing political polarization around LGBTQ+ health issues, can make it challenging for Medicaid policymakers to effectively serve this community.
[Center for Health Care Strategies] spoke with LGBTQ+ Medicaid members, LGBTQ+-serving health care providers, and state Medicaid policymakers across the nation to identify opportunities to better support LGBTQ+ health.
