There Are Still 5 Ways to Sign Up for 2021 Coverage

The COVID special enrollment period (SEP) might be over, but there are still 5 ways for people to enroll in 2021 coverage at HealthCare.gov!
  1. People who submitted an application on HealthCare.gov and received an eligibility determination by August 15 have 30 days to choose a plan. So, for example, if someone submitted their application on August 15, they can still enroll if they select a plan by September 14.
  2. People who receive or are approved to receive unemployment compensation in 2021 are eligible for a SEP. An applicant won’t be approved for a SEP directly in the application but will be contacted within a week by email or phone (according to the communication preferences they selected) to finalize their enrollment. See here and here for more information.
  3. Anyone who missed the COVID SEP window and has been affected by COVID-19 is eligible for the FEMA SEP. There are two ways to claim this SEP. People who lost job-based coverage any time since January 1, 2020 can indicate their loss of coverage on their application to automatically receive the FEMA SEP. Everyone else who missed the COVID SEP will need to call the marketplace call center to be granted the FEMA SEP. The coverage effective date can be prospective (starting the first day of the following month) or retroactive, with the earliest effective date being January 1, 2021. See our new fact sheet about the FEMA SEP.
  4. People with other life changes might qualify for a traditional SEP, including the new SEP for people whose federal COBRA subsidy ends on September 30. See a comprehensive list here.
  5. People who are eligible for Medicaid or CHIP can enroll at any time during the year.
People who are still uninsured should take advantage of these opportunities to enroll in 2021 coverage!
