What Indiana Families Need to Know About HIP Work Requirements

Indiana’s Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) will begin enforcing new work requirements on January 1, 2027. These requirements will apply to many HIP members ages 19–64, but not everyone will be required to meet them.

For those who are required to participate, HIP members must complete at least 80 hours each month through qualifying activities. These can include working, volunteering, attending school at least half-time, participating in an apprenticeship, or taking part in a work program. Members can combine different activities to reach 80 hours.

There are also several exemptions. For families, two important exemptions are for people who are a parent or caregiver of a child age 13 or younger or caregivers for a person with a disability. Other exemptions may apply if someone is pregnant or recently pregnant, was formerly in foster care, is in certain treatment programs, or has a disability or other serious medical condition.

What should HIP members do now? First, make sure the information on your case is accurate. Then, find out whether you qualify for an exemption and learn what activities may count toward the monthly requirement. It is also a good idea to set up an account through the FSSA Benefits Portal, where members can report hours and manage their HIP coverage.

You can also attend one of the upcoming HIP Work Requirements Town Halls to get more information.
